As a homeowner you may not be aware of this but there may be an entire universe of creatures living right under your feet embedded within your carpet. We are not talking about dust mites but rather carpet beetles. These pests – which have a wide diet that includes everything from wool fabric to anything of animal origin such as pet hair, feathers and fur – can exist right beneath your feet. Here are a few other things we think you should know about these nuisances.

Life Cycle

Carpet beetles can be found in a number of regions and come in many varieties. Most adult beetles are usually brown with colored scales and come in different patterns. Mature beetles are around 1/8 inch long and are oval-shaped. Moreover, one female, can lay up 100 eggs at a time, which will hatch into larvae within seven to 35 days. For this reason, an infestation can begin in a relatively small section of a home and quickly spread. Young beetles usually mature into adults from nine months to two years. After this, they only live for several weeks. At the larval stage, carpet beetles measure 4 to 5 mm in length and are oval or carrot shaped. The larva of the black carpet beetle is brown and measures about 8 mm in length. It is at this stage that carpet beetles are the most destructive feeding on a diet dead insects, hides, milled products, pet food, crumbs, lint, felt and soiled clothing.

Detecting Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetles are very small and usually well hidden in the egg or pupal stages. They reside in a number of natural materials. Because of this, identifying an infestation is something that is usually best left to professionals. Professionals can detect them by locating the cast-off skin of adults, adults themselves or by finding their larvae. Professionals can also recommend treatments that can not only clean surface dirt and stains but that also sanitize your carpet beneath the surface.
